Divorce Statistics: The Latest U.S. & Scottsdale, AZ Divorce Statistics

Posted By Legal Team | July 17 2017 | Divorce

Views on marriage and divorce have changed significantly over the past 50 years or so – and these evolving perspectives have had direct impacts on marriage and divorce rates in the U.S.
In fact, countering one of the biggest divorce myths out there, recent findings have suggested that, over the past few decades:

  • Divorce rates in the U.S. have been on the decline.
  • About half of all marriages these days are NOT ending in divorce (with the divorce rate being lower than 50 percent).

Delving deeper into modern divorce trends, below are some of the latest statistics on divorce – for both the U.S. in general, as well as for Arizona specifically.

U.S. Divorce Statistics

  • A first marriage is about 20 percent likely to end in divorce within the first 5 years.
  • Currently, for every 1,000 Americans, approximately 6.9 are getting divorced (annually). This represents a significant drop from 2000, when the rate was about 8.2 (for every 1,000 people).
  • A second marriage is about 23 percent likely to end in divorce within the first 5 years and nearly 40 percent likely to end in divorce after 10 years.
  • Economic status, as well as the age at which people marry and their religious affiliations (if any), are all factors that can directly impact the likelihood of divorce.
  • If current U.S. divorce trends continue, it’s expected that about 2 in every 3 marriages will remain intact (i.e., not end in divorce) over the coming years.

Scottsdale AZ Statistics on Divorce

  • Arizona divorce trends have mirrored the nationally declining divorce rates, with Arizona divorce rates dropping more than 6 percent since 2013.
  • Since 2013, the marriage rates across Arizona have been on the rise, suggesting that the declining divorce rate is not a result of less people getting married in the state.
  • Over the past five years, Maricopa County has consistently seen the highest rate of divorce filings (when compared to any other county in Arizona).
